Preparing Your Home for Freezing Temperatures: Plumbing Tips from Bear’s Plumbing

As inclement weather approaches, it’s essential to prepare your home’s plumbing for freezing temperatures and strong winds. Winter storms can wreak havoc on your plumbing system, but with a little preparation, you can minimize potential damage and keep your home running smoothly.

Indoor Plumbing Preparation

  1. Open Cabinet Doors: For plumbing on exterior walls, opening cabinet doors allows warm air to circulate and prevents pipes from freezing.
  2. Stock Up on Water: Fill a bathtub with water to ensure you can flush toilets if pipes freeze. Additionally, fill pots or containers for cooking or other household needs.
  3. Stay Vigilant: If pipes do freeze, avoid rushing to thaw them. Use a hair dryer to gently warm the pipes or wait for temperatures to rise naturally.

Outdoor Plumbing Protection

  1. Insulate Pipes and Faucets: Wrap all exposed outdoor pipes and faucets to keep them protected from the cold.
  2. Disconnect Hoses: Store garden hoses indoors to prevent water trapped inside from freezing and causing damage.
  3. Bring in Plants and Pets: Your plants and furry friends deserve warmth too! Ensure they’re safely indoors before the cold snap hits.

What to Watch for When Temperatures Rise

Once temperatures climb above freezing, frozen pipes may begin to thaw—and this is when leaks and bursts are most likely to occur. Keep a close eye on your plumbing, and if you notice any issues, call Bear’s Plumbing immediately.

The Reason for the Season

As Christmas approaches, it’s easy to get swept up in the busyness of the season—gifts, gatherings, and glowing decorations. But at the heart of it all is a much deeper truth: the reason for the season is Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6 reminds us of the incredible gift we celebrate:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

In this season of joy, it’s also a time to reflect on the gifts God has given each of us. As Psalm 33:20-22 says:
“We put our hope in the LORD; he is our protector and our help. We are glad because of him; we trust in his holy name. May your constant love be with us, LORD, as we put our hope in you.”

Every good and perfect gift comes from above, including the talents and abilities we are blessed with. At Bear’s Plumbing Services, we are grateful for the knowledge and skill of our team. Our plumbers dedicate thousands of hours to training, becoming experts in their craft and using their God-given talents to serve and protect the health of our community.

This Christmas, we want to thank you for trusting us with your plumbing needs and to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas. If you need us during the holidays, we’ll be here to help.

Call us at 281-350-2327 or fill out our contact form to schedule an appointment. Let us serve you with the same dedication that reflects the joy and hope of the season.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Bear’s Plumbing Services!

Winterize Your Pipes: Protect Your Home This Season

As the temperatures drop, it’s that time of year again—time to winterize your outdoor pipes. This simple task can save you money and prevent costly damage to your home. By taking a few preventive steps, you can avoid pipe breaks, water damage, and the stress of finding a plumber during extended freezing temperatures.

In areas like ours, homes are not typically built to withstand prolonged freezing conditions, especially if combined with power outages. If you were spared during the 2021 freeze, count yourself fortunate! However, it’s crucial to remain vigilant, particularly if your home has PVC, copper, or CPVC pipes, as these materials are vulnerable to cracking—and in some cases, shattering—when exposed to extreme cold.

Tips for Winterizing Your Pipes

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes: Use foam pipe covers or insulating tape on outdoor and unprotected pipes.
  • Disconnect and Drain Hoses: Remove garden hoses from faucets and drain any standing water.
  • Install Faucet Covers: Protect outdoor spigots with insulated covers to minimize heat loss.
  • Shut Off and Drain Water Lines: If you have outdoor plumbing lines that won’t be in use, turn off the water supply and drain the pipes.

What to Do if a Pipe Breaks

If the worst happens and a pipe breaks, call our team at Bear’s Plumbing Services. Our licensed plumbers are here to help with everything from repairs to whole-house repiping. To learn more about our repiping services, visit this page.

Keep Your Home Comfortably Warm with Reliable Hot Water

As the colder months roll in, there’s nothing worse than stepping into a lukewarm shower or waiting forever for hot water. A properly functioning water heater is key to keeping your home cozy and your family happy during chilly temperatures. Here are a few simple checks to ensure your water heater is performing at its best:

  • Age Matters: If your water heater is over 8–10 years old, it might be time to consider an upgrade. Older units are less efficient and more prone to breakdowns, especially when the demand for hot water increases in colder weather.
  • Inspect for Leaks: Regularly check the valves and the pan for any signs of leaks. Even small drips can indicate a problem that could lead to bigger (and more expensive) issues.
  • Cold Weather Woes: During colder temperatures, a struggling water heater is more noticeable. If your water isn’t as hot as it used to be or takes too long to heat up, your system might be starting to fail.

At Bear’s Plumbing, we’re here to help. Not only can we inspect your water heater for issues, but we also offer maintenance schedules to keep your system running efficiently for years to come. Regular maintenance is the best way to maximize your investment and avoid unexpected cold showers.

Don’t wait for your water heater to go completely out. Call Bear’s Plumbing Services today at 281-350-2327 or visit our Water Heater Services page to learn more.

We’re proud to be your local, friendly, neighborhood plumbers—always happy to help keep your home comfortable and your water hot!

As we approach Thanksgiving, Bear and I are feeling especially thankful for the many blessings in our lives. We have so much to be grateful for: our faith, our family, and our country.

First, we are thankful for the business Bear and I have built together. This journey has been a labor of love, made all the better by the relationships and friendships we’ve been blessed with along the way. We’re incredibly grateful for our three wonderful kids, three precious grandkids, a beautiful daughter-in-love, and one more daughter-in-love joining us in February.

A special thank-you to our amazing Bear’s Plumbing team: Jose, William, Colby, David, Clayton, Mason, Luke, Isaac, Frank, and Ana Maria. You’re more than a team; you’re family, and we’re proud of the pride you take in your work. Thanks to you, we are able to keep Bear’s Plumbing going strong. It’s an honor to see our son, Clayton, follow in his dad’s footsteps as a second-generation plumber.

Family time is precious, and we’re grateful to hold onto our Monday through Friday schedule. We want our team to have evenings and weekends to be with their families, as we know those moments make all the difference.

From our family to yours, may your Thanksgiving be filled with peace, love, and blessings. May God bless your homes and hearts, today and always. 🧡

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

Buried Costs: Avoid Generator Installation Pitfalls with a Licensed Plumber

When it comes to installing a home generator, choosing a licensed and insured plumber is essential. Licensed plumbers have the skills and knowledge to ensure that all installation steps are done safely and according to code—especially critical when working with gas and electrical lines. We recently assisted a customer who was shocked to discover their gas and electrical lines were buried just 7 to 9 inches underground, far from the required depths. This lack of professionalism not only put the homeowner at risk but also led to unnecessary, costly rework.

To prevent issues like these, it’s essential that gas lines are buried at a minimum depth of 18 inches, while electrical lines should be 20 inches deep. These standards protect your property, ensure safety, and meet local and national building codes. When these codes aren’t followed, it risks both the homeowner and the technicians handling future repairs.

Additionally, before installing a generator, it’s crucial to mark underground utilities. This is important not only for major projects like adding a deck or installing a pool but also for seemingly simple tasks like putting in a flower bed. Utility lines might not be buried at expected depths, and one wrong move with a shovel could lead to an accidental gas or electric line breach.

Working with a licensed, insured plumber ensures all safety regulations are followed, and you have peace of mind knowing your generator setup is secure and compliant. At Bear’s Plumbing Services, we pride ourselves on getting the job done right the first time. Call us for quality work and reliable installation, every time. 281-350-2327
