Water Leaks Caused by Rodents: How Attic Poison May Lead to Costly Damage

When it comes to rodent control, one common solution many homeowners rely on is placing poison in attics to keep pesky critters at bay. But did you know that using poison may indirectly cause water damage in your home? Here’s how it happens: as rodents consume poison, their need for water increases, and if they can’t find a nearby source, they’ll chew through plumbing pipes to get it. This behavior can lead to severe water leaks, hidden damage, and potentially high repair costs.

Why Poison in the Attic Can Backfire

Rodents, particularly rats and mice, are naturally inclined to gnaw on almost anything in their path, and plumbing pipes are no exception. When poisoned, these creatures experience increased thirst as their bodies attempt to process the toxins. Since attics often lack water sources, they’ll chew through plastic or even metal pipes to find the hydration they desperately need. This behavior not only compromises your plumbing system but can also cause water to leak into walls, ceilings, and floors, potentially leading to mold, mildew, and structural damage.

Signs of Rodent-Related Plumbing Damage

If you’ve recently used rodent poison in your attic or other parts of your home, keep an eye out for these signs that rodents may have compromised your plumbing:

  1. Water Stains – Look for wet spots or stains on ceilings or walls below your attic.
  2. Low Water Pressure – Damaged pipes can reduce water pressure in your home.
  3. Unusual Sounds – Persistent dripping, hissing, or scratching sounds could indicate a leak or gnawing rodents.
  4. Mold or Mildew Odors – Leaks create the perfect environment for mold, which gives off a strong, musty odor.

Preventing Rodent Damage to Plumbing

Here are a few steps to help protect your plumbing while managing a rodent problem:

  • Consider Alternatives to Poison: Traps or ultrasonic deterrents can help control rodents without increasing their thirst.
  • Seal Entry Points: Minimize rodent access by sealing any small gaps or openings around your attic and other areas.
  • Use Rodent-Proof Pipes: For vulnerable areas, such as attics and crawl spaces, use metal or other rodent-resistant pipe materials.

What to Do if You Suspect a Leak

If you notice any of the signs mentioned or suspect a rodent-induced leak, it’s essential to call a licensed plumber to assess the damage and make necessary repairs. At Bear’s Plumbing, we offer comprehensive leak detection and repair services to get your home back in shape.

Final Thoughts

While rodent control is necessary, poison may unintentionally increase your risk of water leaks. Preventative measures, combined with alternative rodent control options, can help protect your plumbing system and reduce the need for costly repairs. And if you’re ever in doubt, our team at Bear’s Plumbing is here to help with reliable, professional plumbing solutions.

Who Are We? A History Lesson on Bear’s Plumbing Services

We thought it would be fun to share some facts about who we are and how we’ve grown over the years here at Bear’s Plumbing Services.

We are a family-owned and operated business that’s been proudly serving the community since 2005. But our journey actually started long before that—Bear has been plumbing for more than half of his life! He got his start way back in 1989, when he joined a work-study program at Klein High School.

Back in the early ‘90s, plumbing hadn’t changed much in over 50 years. But over the last two decades, the industry has evolved drastically, and we’ve kept pace with those changes every step of the way. We make it a priority to stay educated and ready to install top-of-the-line, cutting-edge plumbing systems for our customers. Our operations have transformed from manual paper scheduling to state-of-the-art, fully paperless systems. This allows us to keep our customers informed on scheduling, invoicing, receipts, and even recurring maintenance schedules in real-time. In fact, we implemented these advanced systems for the first time in 2020, and it’s been a game-changer!

One thing that hasn’t changed is Bear’s dedication to excellent service and the community. We are Rinnai certified installers and Kohler Generator certified installers and maintenance contractors. Our membership in the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) reflects our commitment to industry excellence. We take your safety seriously—all of our technicians are licensed, insured, fingerprinted, and background-checked through the great state of Texas.

Bear learned from the best plumbers in the state, and it’s an honor for us to carry forward that training and craftsmanship in every job we do. As longtime members of the Klein community, our roots run deep. Our kids attended Klein and Tomball schools, and we worship in the area. It’s a privilege to serve our friends and neighbors with the high-quality plumbing services we stand for.

On a personal note, Bear is more than just a master plumber—he’s a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and business owner. His commitment to his family and his business is at the core of everything we do at Bear’s Plumbing Services.

Thank you for being part of our story, and we look forward to continuing to serve you with the same dedication and excellence that’s been part of our journey from the very beginning.

So proud of you Honey!

Dealing with Whole House Sewer Stoppages: What You Need to Know

Whole house sewer stoppages can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. While it may seem like the culprit is too much toilet paper, potato peels in the kitchen drain, or other simple clogs, the reality is that if water is backing up into your shower, tub, or (worst case scenario) overflowing from the toilet, it’s likely a sign that your main sewer line has been compromised.

At Bear’s Plumbing, we understand that most plumbing issues are hidden underground, where they’re out of sight and out of mind—until a problem arises. That’s why we offer free camera inspections with any whole house sewer line stoppages. With the proper equipment, we can inspect your entire system and identify the root cause, helping to ensure your toilets, sinks, washing machine, and dishwasher waste lines are free of obstructions and flowing properly.

Common Causes of Sewer Stoppages

  • Tree Roots: Over time, tree roots can invade your pipes, causing blockages or even breaking the line.
  • Bellies in the Line: A sag or “belly” in the sewer line can cause waste to collect in the low point, leading to repeated clogs.
  • Pipe Breaks: Whether due to shifting ground or old, deteriorating pipes, breaks in the line are another common cause of stoppages.

If we find any of these issues, we’ll provide you with a clear plan to move forward with the appropriate repairs.

Protect Yourself When Buying a New Home If you’re purchasing a new home, it’s vital to know the condition of the sewer line before signing on the dotted line. A camera inspection can reveal hidden damage or potential problems, giving you peace of mind that you’re not buying a home with costly repairs lurking below the surface.

At Bear’s Plumbing, we’re committed to keeping your home safe and functional. Whether you’re dealing with a current stoppage or just want to ensure your system is in good shape, give us a call. We’ll be there to help with all your sewer line needs!

Family-owned and operated since 2005, Bear’s Plumbing is proud to be your trusted plumbing partner in the community.

The Importance of Replacing Your Water Heater: What to Know Before It’s Too Late

Water heaters are one of those household appliances we rarely think about—until something goes wrong. But like all things, water heaters have a lifespan, and when they begin to fail, the signs can be subtle or catastrophic. Whether you’re dealing with lukewarm water or leaks, knowing the signs of a failing water heater and understanding the replacement process can save you from expensive repairs and water damage.

Signs Your Water Heater May Be Nearing the End of Its Life

Most water heaters last between 8 and 10 years, but factors like water quality, usage, and maintenance can shorten or extend that timeline. Here are some common signs your water heater is aging:

  • Inconsistent Water Temperature: If your water temperature fluctuates between hot and cold, your heater may be struggling to keep up.
  • Rusty Water: If the water coming from your taps is rust-colored, it may indicate corrosion inside the water heater tank.
  • Strange Noises: Sediment buildup can cause popping or rumbling noises inside the tank. This is a clear sign the water heater is working harder than it should.
  • Water Around the Tank: Leaks or pooling water near your water heater are a big red flag. This can lead to water damage in your home if not addressed quickly.

The Sediment Buildup Problem

As your water heater ages, it collects sediment from the water. This sediment settles at the bottom of the tank, hardening over time and reducing the unit’s efficiency. By the time your water heater is ready for replacement, it could have 8-10 years’ worth of buildup inside. This makes the tank significantly heavier and harder to manage, not to mention more prone to internal damage.

When full of sediment, a water heater can weigh much more than you might expect. That’s why replacing an old unit is more than just a simple swap—it requires expertise and the right equipment to safely remove and install a new one.

Why Work with a Licensed and Insured Plumber: Replacing a water heater is not a simple DIY task. From handling gas lines to ensuring proper venting and securing permits, it’s essential to work with a licensed and insured technician. At Bear’s Plumbing, we are fully licensed and insured, providing peace of mind that your water heater will be replaced safely and professionally.

Building a Relationship with Bear’s Plumbing: We’re proud to be a family-owned and operated business serving our community since 2005. Having a reliable plumber like Bear’s Plumbing as part of your home maintenance team can save you time, stress, and money in the long run. When you know who to call in an emergency—or even for regular maintenance—you avoid the guesswork and get quality service from people who care about you and your home.

Don’t wait for your water heater to fail. Contact Bear’s Plumbing today for an inspection or to discuss your options for a new, more efficient water heater. We’re part of your community, and we’re here to help!

The Power of Positive Reviews: Why They Matter

If you’re happy with the work a company has done, sharing that experience with your friends and family is a small gesture that makes a huge impact. You’ve probably heard the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Think about it: if 100 people gave you compliments and one person said something negative, which comment would linger in your mind? Exactly—the one negative comment.

As a small family business supporting five families (and five future families), we take every review to heart. When we receive a negative review, it stings. What’s even harder to understand is why someone wouldn’t call us directly to resolve an issue before leaving a review. I believe there should be an unspoken “review etiquette”—talk to the company, give them a chance to make things right before resorting to public critique.

But, I choose JOY! Thank you to our wonderful friends, neighbors, and loyal customers for constantly encouraging us with your positive words. Your reviews and referrals remind us to focus on the good. There are already enough “Debbie Downers” in the world, and I’m committed to not joining their ranks. It’s tough sometimes, especially because I genuinely want everyone to be happy and get along.

To everyone who supports us and lifts us up with positive reviews: we appreciate you more than you know. You’re the reason we keep pushing forward.

A special shoutout to our amazing crew—Jose, William, Colby, David, Ana Maria, Frank, Luke, Mason, Clayton, and Isaac—you are the backbone of Bear’s Plumbing. We couldn’t do this without you!

Supporting Local Businesses Sustains Our Community

When you choose to support small businesses, you’re investing in the heart of your community. We’re proud to be a small, family-owned and operated plumbing service company here in Spring, TX, providing installations and repairs for homes and commercial businesses throughout the surrounding areas.

Our story began right here in Klein, TX, where my husband, Eric, our Responsible Master Plumber, first got into the trade through a work-study program at Klein High School. In those early years, Eric worked incredibly hard, often answering calls while knee-deep in attics installing water heaters and scheduling jobs as he went. We’ve grown from a one-truck operation to a five-truck fleet, and with our middle son now joining the team, we’re eagerly looking forward to expanding to six trucks.

When we say we’re a mom-and-pop company, we truly mean it. We’re not just a business; we’re a family—one that extends to our incredible team of plumbers, who feel more like family than employees. It was always important to us as parents to give our guys evenings and weekends off to spend time with their young, growing families. We believe that values and value matter, and we’re firm in our commitment to serving both God and country.

Every day, we wake up with the goal to serve our community and honor God through our work. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from our loyal customers since 2005 and look forward to building relationships with new ones. Our prices are fair and reasonable. As Bear always says, “We’re not going to price gouge folks—we’ll see them in the grocery store!”

Thank you to our community for supporting small businesses like ours. We couldn’t do it without you, and we’re excited to keep serving you for many years to come.

The Importance of Proper Subcontractor Scheduling in Your Remodel

When you’re planning a remodel, especially if you’re not using a general contractor, here’s a quick rule of thumb: the plumber should be the first one in and the last one out, with all other contractors working in between.

For example, if you’re remodeling your kitchen, your plumber will need to cap and relocate the water and gas lines before any carpentry, tile work, sheetrock installation, or painting begins. This ensures that your plumbing is set up properly before other trades get to work, preventing any costly mistakes or delays.

Be sure to use licensed and insured contractors and subcontractors for your project. At Bear’s Plumbing, we stand behind our work, and our remodel projects are hands down the best around. With our skilled team handling your plumbing, you’ll be glad you called!

Thank you, and happy remodeling!

The Importance of Communication in a Connected World

We are meant to be in communication and community with one another. In today’s world, we have more ways to connect than ever before. It’s fascinating to think about how far communication has evolved.

From the days of sending letters—perhaps sped up by the pony express—we now have the ability to instantly text, reaching not just a household but every individual within it. It’s hard to imagine a time without phones, yet I still remember when having speed dial on a home phone mounted to the kitchen wall seemed cutting-edge.

With the advent of emails, text messages, and phone calls, communication has never been more instantaneous. For those of us in the service industry, keeping our customers informed at every step of the process is vital to ensuring a seamless experience.

We understand that no one wants to feel bombarded with messages, but we also know the value of keeping our customers in the loop. That’s why we’ve invested time and resources into implementing systems that allow us to email and text when an appointment is scheduled, when our technician is on the way, and when the work is complete. We even include a picture of the technician, so our customers know exactly who to expect.

Ultimately, we believe it’s better to overcommunicate than to leave anyone feeling uncertain or out of the loop.
