Why Is My Cold Water Hot?

You walk over to the sink.

Turn on the cold water.

And… it’s hot.

Not warm.

Not room temperature.

Actually hot.

If you live in Houston or surrounding areas, you’re definitely not the first person to ask:

“Why is my cold water hot?”

And the answer is…

It depends.

Sometimes It’s Completely Normal (Thank You Houston Summers ☀️)

Let’s start with the obvious.

It is HOT in Houston.

And during the summer months, many homes have plumbing pipes running through attics where temperatures can become extremely high.

Those attic temperatures heat the water sitting inside your pipes.

So when you first turn on your faucet:

🚰 The water sitting in the pipes comes out first
🌡️ Those pipes may have been cooking in a 130+ degree attic
💧 It can take a little while for cooler water to arrive

This is especially common:

  • Early evenings
  • Upstairs bathrooms
  • Homes with long pipe runs
  • Attic plumbing systems

Sometimes the answer is simply:

“Because Texas.”

But Sometimes It Isn’t Normal

If the cold water stays hot much longer than expected, there could be other issues happening.

A Bad Faucet Cartridge

Faucet cartridges control water flow and temperature.

When cartridges begin failing, they can allow hot water to cross over into the cold side of the plumbing system.

Clues this may be happening:

  • One fixture has temperature issues
  • Handles are difficult to turn
  • Temperatures fluctuate unexpectedly

A Bad Mixing Valve or Mixing Cartridge

Many homes have mixing valves that blend hot and cold water together.

When these components fail, they can create strange temperature problems throughout the home.

Sometimes homeowners think:

“My water heater is failing.”

Meanwhile…

It’s the mixing valve causing the confusion.

Washing Machine Solenoid Valves Can Cause Problems Too

This one surprises people.

Your washing machine has valves (called solenoid valves) controlling hot and cold water flow.

When they begin failing, hot water can sometimes migrate into cold water lines.

Yes.

Your washing machine can occasionally create temperature issues elsewhere in the home.

Plumbing is weird sometimes. 😂

So When Should You Call?

If:
✔️ Cold water stays hot for long periods
✔️ Multiple fixtures are affected
✔️ Temperatures suddenly changed recently
✔️ Water never seems to cool down

…it may be time to investigate further.

Because while sometimes the answer is simply:

“Houston attics are hot.”

Sometimes your plumbing system is trying to tell you something.

And thankfully… Bear likes solving mysteries.
