One of the things I’ve learned over the years in plumbing is this:
Just because something is hidden behind walls doesn’t mean it lasts forever.
Recently, we’ve been talking with more homeowners about aging copper piping systems — especially in homes built in the late 1990s throughout our area.
Many of those homes were built using Type M copper piping.
Now if you’re reading this thinking:
👉 “I had no idea there were different types of copper pipes.”
Trust me… neither did I when Bear first started teaching me about plumbing. 😂
But the difference matters.
Type M vs. Type L Copper
Type M copper is a thinner-walled copper pipe commonly used in residential construction years ago because it was less expensive.
The problem?
It generally has a lifespan closer to:
⏳ 20 years
Compared to:
✔️ Type L copper, which has thicker walls and can often last 50+ years under the right conditions.
That means many homes built in the late 90s are now reaching the age where leaks begin showing up unexpectedly.
And Copper Leaks Rarely Happen at Convenient Times
It usually starts small:
- A pinhole leak
- A damp spot
- A little corrosion
And then suddenly:
💧 Water behind walls
💧 Wet flooring
💧 Ceiling stains
💧 Damage spreading while nobody is home
And honestly? One of the hardest things for homeowners is coming home from vacation to discover water has been leaking for days.
Especially during the summer travel season.
That’s why more homeowners are starting to think proactively instead of reactively.
Repiping Isn’t Fun… But Neither Is Water Damage
Nobody wakes up excited to replace plumbing pipes.
But replacing aging Type M copper before widespread failures begin can:
✔️ Prevent emergency leaks
✔️ Protect your home
✔️ Reduce long-term repair costs
✔️ Bring peace of mind while traveling
At Bear’s Plumbing, we help homeowners evaluate the condition of their piping systems and determine whether repairs or a full repipe makes the most sense for their home and budget.
Because the goal isn’t fear.
The goal is preparation.
And sometimes the smartest plumbing decision is handling the problem before the water finds its own way out. 💙
