Have you ever had a faucet handle that became harder and harder to turn?
At first, you don’t think much about it.
You push a little harder.
Then a little harder.
Eventually you’re using both hands and thinking…
“Why is this thing so hard to turn?”
After all these years working alongside Bear, I can tell you that when a faucet becomes difficult to operate, there’s usually a reason.
And around here, one of the first things we think about is water quality.
A Recent Faucet Repair in Magnolia
We recently helped a homeowner in Magnolia who was having problems with their faucets.
It’s a call we receive regularly, and it reminded me of something homeowners don’t always realize:
The water flowing through your plumbing affects the life of almost everything it touches.
We tend to think of hard water as the annoying white spots left behind on our faucets, shower glass, sinks, and tile.
But that’s only the part we can see.
What’s happening inside your plumbing fixtures is another story.
What Is Happening Inside Your Faucet?
Your faucet contains small moving parts, seals, cartridges, and openings that control the flow and temperature of your water.
Hard water contains dissolved minerals.
Over time, mineral deposits can accumulate on and around those components.
Eventually, you may notice:
- A faucet handle becoming difficult to turn.
- Reduced water flow.
- Hot and cold water not mixing properly.
- Dripping after the faucet is turned off.
- White or chalky buildup around the fixture.
- A cartridge that needs to be replaced.
The change can happen so gradually that you don’t even realize how difficult the faucet has become to operate.
Then the cartridge gets replaced and suddenly…
Oh my goodness! Was it always supposed to turn that easily?
😂
Your Faucet May Be Telling You Something
This is one of those little homeowner lessons I’ve learned from Bear:
Pay attention when something changes.
A faucet shouldn’t suddenly require muscle to turn.
A shower handle shouldn’t become increasingly difficult to move.
Your water pressure shouldn’t slowly disappear from one fixture.
Those little changes are often your plumbing system’s way of telling you that something is going on.
And forcing a handle that’s becoming harder to operate isn’t necessarily the answer. You may eventually damage another component and turn a relatively simple repair into something larger.
It’s Not Just Your Faucets
Hard water doesn’t pick on faucets.
The same water travels throughout your entire home.
That means mineral buildup can affect your:
Water heater.
Shower valves and cartridges.
Toilet components.
Dishwasher.
Washing machine connections.
Tankless water heater.
And other fixtures and appliances that use water every day.
That’s why I talk about water quality so much.
Those white spots on your faucet aren’t just a cleaning problem.
They’re a little clue about what’s traveling through the rest of your plumbing system.
Can You Prevent It?
You can’t stop your plumbing fixtures from aging.
Everything eventually wears out.
But improving your home’s water quality can help reduce the mineral buildup your plumbing system has to deal with every single day.
That’s one reason we talk with homeowners about water softeners and whole-home water treatment.
It’s not simply about having water that feels nicer.
For me, it’s about protecting your home.
If I’m going to invest thousands of dollars in water heaters, faucets, appliances, toilets, and plumbing fixtures, I want to do what I reasonably can to help those things last.
Listen to Your Home
If your faucet is becoming difficult to turn, don’t wait until you’re wrestling with it every morning.
Have someone take a look.
It may simply need a new cartridge.
It may have mineral buildup.
It may be reaching the end of its useful life.
Or it may be giving you a clue that it’s time to think about the quality of the water throughout your home.
One thing I’ve learned from Bear is that our plumbing systems usually give us warning signs.
We just have to learn to recognize them.
And apparently, after more than twenty years as The Plumber’s Bride…
I’m finally learning to listen. 😂💙
If your faucets are trying to tell you something, Bear’s Plumbing will be here when you need us.
