I may be a little biased.
After all, I’ve been married to a plumber for a very long time.
But after more than twenty years of owning a plumbing company with Bear, there is something I wish more people understood:
Plumbing isn’t simply about fixing toilets and dripping faucets.
Plumbers help protect our homes, our families, and our communities every single day.
And most of the time, nobody thinks about them until something stops working.
Think About Life Without Plumbing
Could you live for a while without electricity?
It certainly wouldn’t be comfortable. No air conditioning in a Texas summer might change my answer pretty quickly. 😂
But think about what happens when you don’t have safe water coming into your home—or a sanitary way for wastewater to leave it.
You need clean, potable water for drinking.
For cooking.
For washing your hands.
For bathing your children.
For cleaning your home.
And just as importantly, you need a safe system for carrying sewage and wastewater away from your family.
That’s what plumbing does.
Every single day.
We turn on a faucet and expect clean water to come out.
We flush a toilet and expect everything to disappear.
We take a shower, start the washing machine, run the dishwasher, and fill a glass from the kitchen faucet without thinking twice about what is happening behind the walls and beneath our homes.
That’s actually a pretty incredible thing.
Plumbing Is About Public Health
One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Bear is that plumbing codes aren’t there just to make a plumber’s job more complicated.
There is a reason for them.
Proper plumbing helps keep drinking water safe and wastewater where it belongs.
Things like backflow prevention, proper drainage, venting, gas piping, water heater installation, and sewer systems aren’t just technical details.
They help protect people.
When plumbing is installed correctly, you may never think about it.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
The Unsung Heroes
Our technicians don’t wear capes.
Although now that I’ve typed that, I’m tempted to order some. 😂
They crawl through hot Texas attics.
They climb underneath houses.
They dig through mud.
They open sewer lines that I promise you most of us would rather not see.
They work in the rain.
They repair broken water lines when families have no water.
They restore hot water.
They repair gas systems.
They help stop sewage from backing up into people’s homes.
And sometimes they arrive when a homeowner is scared because water is pouring through a ceiling and they don’t know what to do.
It’s not glamorous work.
But it matters.
Plumbers are truly some of the unsung heroes of our communities.
Why Bear’s Plumbing Is Different
There are a lot of plumbing companies.
So what makes Bear’s Plumbing different?
For us, it comes down to something Bear has taught our team from the beginning:
We want to leave your home’s plumbing system better than we found it.
That doesn’t mean finding unnecessary things to repair.
It means paying attention.
If we’re working underneath your sink and notice something that could become a problem, we want you to know about it.
If we’re replacing a water heater and see something that isn’t installed properly, we don’t want to simply connect the new heater exactly the way the old one was.
If we’re clearing a sewer stoppage, we want to understand why it happened whenever possible—not just get the water moving and leave.
If we open a wall, climb into an attic, or get underneath your home, we’re looking at the entire situation.
Because we’re not just there to complete a task.
We’re there to take care of your home.
Your Home Deserves More Than a Quick Fix
I say this all the time:
Your home is probably one of the largest investments you’ll ever make.
The plumbing running through it is a system.
One repair can affect another part of that system, and shortcuts hidden behind walls can sometimes create problems years later.
Our technicians understand that when they walk through your front door, they’re being trusted with more than pipes.
They’re being trusted with your home.
Your belongings.
Your family’s water.
And your safety.
That’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.
I’m Proud of This Trade
After all these years, I have an entirely different appreciation for plumbers than I did when I first became The Plumber’s Bride.
I’ve watched Bear build his career in this trade.
I’ve watched our son become a plumber.
I’ve watched apprentices learn from experienced technicians.
And I’ve watched our team come home dirty, soaking wet, exhausted, or covered in things I don’t even want to ask about. 😂
But I’ve also watched them help families.
I’ve watched them solve problems.
I’ve watched them protect homes.
And I’ve watched them take pride in doing something the right way—even when the homeowner will never see the work once the wall is closed.
That is craftsmanship.
And that is why this industry matters.
To the Plumbers Nobody Thinks About Until They Need One…
Thank you.
Thank you for protecting our water.
Thank you for protecting our homes.
Thank you for learning a skilled trade that our communities cannot function without.
And to our Bear’s Plumbing team specifically:
I hope you know how proud Bear and I are of the work you do and the way you represent our family and our company.
We aren’t trying to be the company that simply fixes today’s problem.
We want to be the plumbers our customers trust to help protect their homes for years to come.
Leave it better than you found it.
That’s a pretty good rule for plumbing.
And maybe for life, too. 💙
