What Is a Shower Pan?

Before working in the plumbing industry, if someone had asked me what a shower pan was, I probably would have guessed it was something you cooked dinner in!

It’s actually the waterproof liner or base beneath your shower floor that’s designed to keep water from escaping into the structure of your home.

You never see it.

But every time you shower, it’s working to protect your floors, walls, and ceiling below.

Why Do Shower Pans Leak?

Over time, shower pans can develop problems for several reasons.

Some of the most common include:

• Age
• Normal wear and tear
• Movement or settling of the home
• Improper installation – We fix these issues all the time.
• Cracked grout or failing caulk that allows water to travel where it shouldn’t

The tricky part is that you may not notice the problem until water has already found another path.

And water is incredibly patient.

It only needs the smallest opening.

The Damage Isn’t Always in the Bathroom

Our technicians temporarily seal the shower drain and carefully fill the shower base with water.

The water is then allowed to sit for a period of time while we monitor for any signs of leakage.

If the water level drops or moisture appears where it shouldn’t, we’ve identified the source of the problem.

It’s a simple test, but it can provide valuable answers before unnecessary repairs are made.
