Are Trades dying?

RIPThere is a struggle to find people willing to learn a [trade] skill that is in demand.

So I started writing this post before I read the article, and I was excited to see the commonality between my thoughts and the thoughts of Mike Rowe and Candace Roulo. The age old expression of the “_ _ _ _  is going to hit the fan” could be very literal in the next few decades as Tradesmen, especially plumbers, start retiring and aging out of society.

If we do not encourage our kids who were not meant for the round hole that society and parents are banging their square heads through, we are setting them up for failure.  But what about encouraging our gifted children who may not be cut out for secondary education, but are mechanical to reach for those goals and not discourage them?

It is important to find dedicated people, because plumbing is important.  The spencer TracyHollywood legend Spencer Tracy once made a wry remark about keeping his profession in perspective: “Acting is not an important job in the scheme of things. Plumbing is.”

Here is an excerpt from an article I read: LIKE a lot of teens, South Grafton’s Brielle Lentfer really didn’t know what she wanted to do when she ‘grew up’.

“I thought it would be something in retail,” the grounded 18-year-old said. “So I did my school-based traineeship behind the trade desk.”

And so the initial seeds of a career in plumbing took hold despite Brielle figuring that sort of thing wasn’t an option for a girl.

“I did learn that I liked being outside and not cooped up while doing desk work, but talking to the plumbers when they came in opened up doors.”

To read the full article click here:   http://www.dailyexaminer.com.au/news/brielles-choice-of-career-no-longer-a-pipedream/2688563/

If only there were more of these driven young adults in the area.  We are always looking for hardworking people to join our team, and it would be amazing to find someone like Brielle.

pipe wrench“The goal of mikeroweWORKS is pretty simple — help close the skills gap by encouraging men and women to get the training they need to pursue good jobs that actually exist,” said Rowe.  An excerpt from  http://contractormag.com/plumbing-contractor/mike-rowe-joins-home-services-companies-promote-skilled-trades

What does roofing have to do with plumbing?

Did you know that the majority of the pipe coming out of your roof is plumbing related? The pipes are vent pipes connected to the pipes that waste exit your home.  Recently, we had a hailstorm that damaged many roofs and cars in the area. Bear pointed out to me this weekend that most of the roofers are not repairing or replacing the vent flashings on the roof.  roof piping this is what you do NOT want

This is what you do not want your pipes to look like on your roof.  The rubber will deteriorate over time.

I said “so, what does that have to do with us?”  We too will be having a new roof installed in the upcoming weeks due to this damage but our vent flashings will be new.  We are using a local roofer from the area, not one of these fly by night roofing companies that travel from out of state to take advantage of unaware clients.

The plumbing piping coming out of the roof provides the atmospheric pressure needed to flush waste from your home to the public sewer system or septic system, and help keep the smell of sewer gases out of your house.   If you are paying thousands of dollars for a new roof, make sure you’re using a credible company who is including the vent flashings along with the new roof.   Request lead flashings for these vent pipes.  The biggest concern you will have with lead pipes would be squirrels eating them.  squirrel

Should you have any questions regarding ventilation piping or any other plumbing need please do not hesitate to call us at 281.350.BEAR (2327)!!

Is it a sink issue or an AC issue?

Summer time is the harvesting season for slug in the drain pipes in the Houston and vinegar and baking sodasurrounding areas. Several years ago I posted this very simple post AC drain. Bear said that is all you need. But is it? My youngest son complained and complained that his sink was draining slow and even backing up. So what did this plumbers son do. He Googled it. Found a you tube video on what you can do to the sink drain. Yes he and a buddy of his raided the pantry for vinegar and baking soda. A simple solution to try and buy you some time is

  • Pour a pot of boiling hot water down your drain.
  • Dump in about 1/2 c. baking soda. Let that sit for a few minutes.
  • Then, pour a mixture of 1 c. vinegar and 1. c very hot water down on top of the baking soda.
  • Cover with a drain plug (to keep the reaction down below the drain surface) if you have one and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  • Flush one more time with a pot of boiling water.

I say this will buy you some time because yes it worked for a while but the line did need to be augured. So Bear had to step in and take care of a home repair. This is one of those situations you need to watch carefully. If the sink overflows on a second floor you could have damage done to the ceiling below. Give us a call we would love to help you out.

I know we are on borrowed time …….

Recently I received an email from a friend……..I know we are on borrowed time because our water heaters are 13 years old.

Like anything these days the common phrase is they just don’t make it like they used to.   My friend was correct that you are on borrowed time with a 13 year old water heater. In April 2012 I wrote an article about expiration dates. https://theplumbersbride.com/2012/04/27/do-water-heaters-have-an-expiration-date/

IMG_2700In that post we told our customers that 8 years is when you should start looking at replacing. Sometimes I hear Bear tell customers 8-10 years. So when you say 13…..well you should keep an eye on them. Look for any rust or water in the pan beneath the heaters. The last thing you want is for one of these to flood your house.

We told you in January ….so we are reminding you again…..

Here is a reminder – we first told you in January about the energy efficiency standards changing next month.  We want to keep our customers and the public informed.  Water heaters produced after April 16, 2015 must conform to new energy efficiency standards.  You can refer to the previous post for details about what this means to you.

What do the 2015 Government changes to water heater manufacturers mean to you?
