Keeping You in Hot Water… It’s Not Always the Water Heater

I recently attended a women’s retreat, and wouldn’t you know it…
my Plumber’s Bride instincts kicked right in.

We were all getting settled in, and it didn’t take long before the chatter started:
“There’s hardly any hot water for showers.”

Now, naturally, my mind went straight to the water heater. I checked it out — and it was only a couple of years old. So that didn’t quite add up.

Then one of my cabin buddies said,
“The sink water is piping hot.”

Well now that got my attention.

So let’s recap:
✔️ Newer water heater
✔️ Hot water at the lavatory faucet
✔️ Plenty of hot water in another bathroom
❌ But no hot water in the shower

That’s when I did what any good Plumber’s Bride would do… I texted Bear.

“Is this a cartridge issue?”

And just like that — I was spot on.

For those of you who don’t know, the cartridge inside your faucet or shower valve controls the flow and mix of hot and cold water. When it starts to fail (and especially in our hard water area), it can restrict or completely block the hot water side.

I shared what I learned with the facilities coordinator, and sure enough — once the cartridge was replaced, we had hot water the very next day.

But here’s the part that really stuck with me.

Before it was fixed, the handle was super difficult to turn. You had to really work at it just to get the water on. After the cartridge was replaced? Smooth as butter.

That’s your clue.

👉 If your faucet or shower handle is hard to turn AND you’re having hot water issues… it might not be your water heater at all.

It immediately reminded me of my grandmother’s house. Her faucets were always so hard to turn, and we were constantly replacing cartridges. Looking back now, I realize just how much our hard water plays a role in wearing down these components over time.

And no… before you ask… I will not be attempting to replace a cartridge myself anytime soon. 😂
I have learned my lane.

I’ll stick to answering the phones, taking care of customers, and letting Bear and the boys handle the tools. I’m pretty sure if I tried to “help,” it would just create another service call… at my own house.

But I will say this — I’ve learned enough to know that:

Keeping you in hot water doesn’t always mean replacing your water heater.

Sometimes, it’s the little things you can’t see.

And sometimes, it just takes asking the right question.
