Did you know you should have your temperature relief valve checked every year? I didn’t!!!Do you
know where the temperature relief valve is? This device is on your water heater and is a safety device to keep your water heater from exploding. Ok that scares me and I am sure I can’t be the only one. Bear!!!!!! Is there anything I can do???!!??? I know I have spoken about this before. The possibility of a gas explosion terrifies me. Knowing that it can explode, shoooot I don’t even want to try and take a look at it.
So I made Bear go into the attic with me to check out the temperature relief valve. Once he showed it to me, I asked what it is supposed to look like or what I can do to test it. He said lift that knob. So I go to do it and he said WAIT don’t do it now. : ) If it fails I would have to fix it. : ( See he is already off the clock. So I ask what would happen. Would it explode, would it flood the house? No, if it works it will release water to the outside of the house via a pipe. The problem happens when you try to switch the valve back it may fail. By fail it may not shut off when you release the spring loaded handle. This is a common problem with these valves. Bear said they never get used, so they tend to not work properly when needed.
Have you seen the Allstate commercials?
It is very important that you keep this device in good working condition. We would be glad to put you on a reminder list to call once a year to check this out. Give us a call and let us know if we can help you out.
Well summer is fast approaching. Are you ready for those back yard festivities? Bear and I are in the minority as we prefer charcoal to gas grills. Then you have the fireplace. Only I am in the minority. I prefer real wood fires and he would love to put gas logs in. We do have gas at the fire place which I love the easy start with gas as opposed to all the paper I had to use when I was young and lived at home.
Ok sorry I got side tracked with the indoors and I meant to write about the outdoors. Do you prefer to use charcoal, propane or a gas grill in your back yard? If you would like to install a gas grill Bear can set you up with running the gas. If you want to install an outdoor kitchen he can take care of the sink and gas for the grill.
How about a fire pit? On those cool summer evenings…LOL
…..well ….we have cool winter evenings that you could use a fire pit. Bear can run the gas for that too.
Just curious what it would cost, give Bear a call 832-287-5180. He can swing by take a look and get you a quote. You just might be surprised
Recently I watched a webcast on the subject of marketing and growing your business. I had to stop watching it in the middle because it just wasn’t settling with me. Ok you all know I have no back ground in plumbing. Bear does, 24 years to be exact. Neither of us have a background in sales, but we do know what we want for our company. We want to build a relationship with our customers. We want to service all of our customers equally the same for a fair price; fair for the customer and fair for us. We provide good quality repair for residential and commercial customers. The whole point of the presentation was to up sale customers and only market towards the exclusive high end area. That just is not our thing. Why should anyone be sold something they do not need? I don’t like going to get my oil changed for the same reason. I don’t know what I need and I am trusting that the mechanic will do the right thing. That is why we know our mechanic by his first name. Thanks Bob!!! : ) Put your trust in us.
Just today I ran into a dear friend of the family. It had been years since I have seen her. What wonderful memories our families shared. I was telling her about this webcast. She said something that meant the world to me. Bear is so personable which makes a difference. You know what she is right. It makes all the difference in the world. Bear is a great guy and I am one lucky woman. You are all lucky too if you call him your plumber and by his first name. : )
I still believe
Keep sharing our name and number with your friends and family.
This is a loaded question. What type of shower do you prefer, is a better question. You will not believe all of the different options out there.
So many, you really need to know what you like;
if it is rustic and simple…..
…..or high end and unique![]()

a lot of pressure…..
…. or very little pressure
I assure you there is something for each and every one of us. If you are curious about options and pricing, we can help you find what fits your budget.
Shower discussions came up the other day which led us to thinking and talking about when our two little ones get into high school. I can see it now; long showers are in our future. Bear then brought up the shut off valve system that we have in our home. These systems are installed in newer homes. Bear said that he was looking forward to playing a prank on our son when he is a teenager, by cutting short his long showers by turning off the hot water to his shower with the valve system. The thought of this really can make a parent giggle.
I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Christmas and New Year’s. I would like to take you back to the post Spring Area Natural Gas Issue that I posted on 10/17/2012. Remember I kept telling Bear that I smelled gas in our bedroom. The solution at that time was the gas company had increased the odor that day. The gas company came out and “fixed the problem”.
Well I started to smell gas in the same area of the house. Again, Bear kept saying he didn’t smell anything. Seriously!!! Each day the smell seemed to get stronger. I started closing the door to our bedroom so when we would walk in you could get a good whiff. Then finally Bear smelt it too. He went inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs, and in the attic. However the detector did not get a strong signal of the gas, until he went in the attic and put the detector in the cavity of the wall and at the meter going into the brick of the house. He had to take the meter apart and then what he found was not good. Jake and I had to go in the attic while Bear moved the pipe in the wall from outside of the house. There was no movement. This was not good because that meant the problem was lower in the wall. Bear came
inside and said he has to cut the wall. I was ok with that, however, did I tell you that I have no concept for location when in comes to where pipes are actually located in the wall. Kind of like some people have no concept of time. I literally yelled at Bear when I walked back in the bedroom and he was cutting the sheet-rock on my side of the bed. I am sure you can figure out why I was so upset. You see we all know that this time next year I will still have the cut sheet-rock….I married a plumber not a drywall man. : )
The wall comes off and he moved the pipe with his hand it was soooo loose. He said it
was obviously only hand tightened during the new construction process. The scary thing to me is how often does that actually happen? Well I can tell you now that it has officially happened twice in our home. When the house was being constructed Bear would go by after work to check on things. They were getting ready to close up a wall in the kitchen and since all of the plumbing was completed. However a water pipe was just placed together not glued or anything. Bear repaired it that afternoon. Back to the gas leak…..He figured out with the new meter installed by the gas company in September that the pipe loosened in the wall because it was improperly installed.
Ladies trust your noses, if you smell gas call a plumber if the plumber can’t get there right away call the gas company. The gas company will pull your meter, turn off your gas and have you call a plumber to find and repair the leak.
If you live in the Spring area please be advised the gas company over odorized the natural
gas in our area last night. Center Point Energy had over 700 calls in the area for potential gas leaks today. Plumbing companies phone lines are being flooded with calls for gas leaks. This is very scary to me, because we too have had the smell of gas in our home today. It took Center point over 6 hours to get here today. Some leaks can be repaired by plumbing companies but some at the meters should be repaired by the gas company. Natural gas by nature has no odor. What you smell has been added by man so that we can be alarmed by smell and take immediate action. Nausea and headaches can be caused by breathing natural gas.
If you smell gas it is very important to call either the gas company at 713-659-2111 or 888-876-5786 or your local plumber. You can even give Bear a call at 832-287-5180.
I know I am not the only one out there scared of my house blowing up because of a gas leak.
We had our gas meter upgraded on Monday. So, when I came home from Bible study on Monday night I walked in my bedroom and said “Do ya’ll smell gas” everyone said no. So the next morning I woke up and I still smelled gas, again no one in the house smelled it but me. Then today, I wake up walk out of my bedroom to get coffee come back into the bedroom and man I still smelt it but it was stronger today ….Bear do you smell gas. NO!!!! I leave to take the kids to school walk back in the house ….Oh my word do you not smell gas…..NO!!!! He said. So I continued to work at my desk. Bear goes outside to get ready to head out for the day, walks back in the house and guess what……Honey do you smell gas……AAgggrrrr YES!!! So he walks around the house with his gas detector….nothing…..then he walks outside to check at the meter…..WOW he said the leak was so bad his detector went crazy so he had to turn the gas off to the house. So ladies trust your noses and call us if you suspect a leak.
So my big concern today is what IF the gas company had not over odorized? Would the gas leak from my meter have been detected? I smelt it in my house because of the bathroom exhaust vent which was direclty above the gas meter. Very scary!!!
HOLD that thought!! I can’t even imagine where all of your thoughts just took you….The age old adage that goes along with “the plumber” is not that pleasant of a thought. Not to mention the visual ; ). My husband is not your everyday plumber. I can remember a time when a friend of his even told him….”Bear you are not the average plumber”. Bear has worked with some extraordinary men in this industry his mentor and role model is one of the best in the area.
Advisory – The names have been changed to protect the innocent : ) We had a customer call today and we will call her Mrs. Smith wanting to schedule an estimate. Bear immediately recognized the address and the Mrs. Smith over the phone. He told her “yes Mrs. Smith I remember you and your house”. She was puzzled, “but I have never used you before”. He said “Yes ma’am I know. I have been to your house when I worked for a different company”. “Oh” she said.
Bear arrived at Mrs. Smith’s house and walked through everything she needed. She immediately told him “oh yes I can tell I am going to use you for this work”. If you have not used my husband or do not know him it is hard to explain in writing. Actions speak louder than words. He is amazing with customers. He is personable, kind, and wants to help. Sorry, back to the story. When they were finishing up the estimate and visiting (yes he is known to visit with a lot of his customers). He asked her “do you remember Mr. Jones the plumber”? “Oh yes” she said. He was wonderful” and went on and on. She said “Mr. Jones and his helper they were just great. I miss them, you don’t find customer service like that much anymore”. Bear said “Mrs. Smith….I was that helper” : )
When Bear told me this story it just filled me with laughter and such happiness. I am married to one amazing man, who obviously from this kind ladies recollection has been pretty amazing for at least as long as he has been a plumber ; )
We are a family owned and operated small business. We want you to enjoy inviting us into your homes and businesses.
Have a blessed week.
There are many reasons and factors that can cause a water heater to not stay lit. The top 5 common ones are.
1. Thermocouple goes out
2. Gas utilities being turned off
3. Air temperature in the attic
4. Lack of Air / oxygen
5. Defective gas control valve
Several months ago we had a customer (also a dear friend) replace their hot water heater.
The brand new water heater would not stay lit. The water heater was in the utility room so it was not overheating or getting blown out, however it was behind a movable wall. Bear tried everything he knew, he even replaced the gas control valve. After several trips to drill holes in the wall, install a vent to the wall, replace the gas control valve AGAIN the heater has now stayed lit. We then found out after research that the new style water heaters are not getting enough oxygen to stay lit. We consulted with another plumber in the area having similar issues. Some water heaters in attics are requiring a fresh air vent to be installed from the soffit vent to the area where the pilot light of the water heater is. Keep in mind there could be several factors affecting any issue…in this case nature and faulty manufacturing were the two.
This week we have had another customer call that has TWO heaters in the attic that will not stay lit. Being the expert that I am (LOL), I told Bear it can’t be faulty manufacturing on TWO waterheaters at the same time in the same attic. It is great being right some of the time : ) These are tricky situations. As you read before there are many factors. Time to
get some questions answered. Makes me think of going to the Dr. What hurts, how long has it hurt, have you changed your eating habits or exercise routine…..So has anything changed in the attic? Funny question, but….the attic did recently have new insulation put in. The soffit vents that provide air flow in the attic have been covered by the insulation. REVIEW – What does a gas water heater need to stay lit?
Oxygen!!!
So just move the insulation, right? Not necessarily. Some solutions as stated above are to install a fresh air duct to bring air directly to the pilot light area. The solution in this case was to have a roofer install a vent to this attic since the soffit vents were covered by insulation.
Since we are having this issue come up again and again.
We decided to call one of the manufacturers. Would you believe that when the heater manufacture called Bear back they told him the max air temperature the water heater could handle was 115 degrees? Bear laughed, do you realize we live in Houston, TX and I have been in attics that are 157 degrees. Ok side note be kind to your plumber whether you use Bear’s Plumbing or someone else see if you can schedule attic work first thing in the morning : )
If you have a specific question please post it to the blog, email, or give us a call. We would love to answer your question in an effort to help you and others.
Ok, so I had the opportunity to be a plumber’s helper this week in the field with Bear. It was very difficult for me to sit in the passenger seat. Riding to the job and then to lunch and then
back to the office. I guess I truly am a control freak. I need to be doing something all of the time. So what does a plumber’s helper do? Well, I was a gofer. Go get the caulk, go get the silicone, go get some shims, unbox the toilet and take it upstairs. Ok!!! Stop right there. I will take the tank and the lid, but you are going to have to take the toilet. Could I have taken it up stairs, sure I could have but at what cost? I might have dropped it, (not likely), I might have hit the wall or the stair rail (more likely).
I was nervous, out of my element. You see, this was not my first on the job experience but, my second trip on the job with Bear. The first one did not go over so well. I wanted to do a good job for him. I wanted to impress him. Married for 13 years this September and I still want to impress my man. : ) He is a good man and I am so very blessed and proud of him.
Back to the story…. So we get to this job and we are installing 3 toilets at a machine shop. We walked in to find out where the restrooms were that we would be installing the new toilets. While Bear got started inside, it was my job to get the toilets off the truck and start bringing them outside the door and unboxing them. I was, again nervous. So I started stacking two boxes on the dolly to start rolling. Let me, let you in on a little secret if you did not know. Toilets do not come in a perfectly square or rectangle box. They are kinda folded to fit so it did not really stack perfectly, but I was ready to pull back and press forward. Right at that very minute Bear walked out. I hurried, so that he would not come to take over for me. I wanted to do it!!! I wanted to do a good job!!! he said WAIT not loud or angry. Right then I pulled back and did not have my balance on the boxes and they toppled over. I froze…. waited for it….WOW he could have exploded!!! but he didn’t. I was embarrassed and all he did was shake his head. He looked at me and said did you break them? No, they are ok, I’m sorry I just wanted to do it on my own for you. He of course took it from me. I did the next two by myself, and took my time.
It’s not over the story gets a little better. So we are inside cutting the wall and pipe (very loud). He had some trash to get together so he had me pick it up and start taking it to the van and bring some tools back. AGAIN, for whatever reason I was nervous. I hurriedly picked up the trash bucket etc, and then tripped and dropped everything on the floor. Can I tell you this office was very quiet……I giggled; it was all I could do….He said what are you doing? I’m sorry honey, I am just so nervous.
That night we talked about it and he said it was hard for him to ask me to go and get things
for him. He said it did not feel right asking his wife to go get things. His son it is ok, but his wife was unsettling for him. We are a family business growing together, we are so very blessed.
When will the next on the job trip be? Who knows? Can Bear handle the help? : ) Maybe it will be your home or business feel free to ask me to sit and chat over coffee while Bear does the heavy lifting ; )
